Join us on January 23rd at 5 p.m. as we talk with Natalie Buda Smith about work underway at the Library of Congress using AI to improve access to legislative data, operations, and lawmaking practices. We will talk about how the Library is implementing AI and machine learning with legislative data, using natural language processing to test summarization of legislative bills and build tools to assist staff with the exponentially increasing amounts of bills, amendments, resolutions, and more. We will talk about the Library’s frameworks for AI innovation and how the Library of Congress ensures that implementation is done responsibly and with consideration for the authenticity and reliability of information​.

Natalie Buda Smith is the Director of Digital Strategy at the Library of Congress, where she leads the use of AI and other emerging technologies to foster innovation. The Library of Congress serves millions daily in their pursuit of researching our rich cultural archives at www.loc.gov, understanding the U.S. government through www.congress.gov, and serving our nation's creative communities through Copyright services at www.copyright.gov. She is a leader in digital transformation through data, emerging technologies, and human-centered design practices with over 30 years of experience in IT, in the U.S., Europe, and India. She is strongly committed to ethical, human-centered products and services that adhere to best practices in inclusion, diversity, and accessibility.

Natalie will talk with Dr. Beth Simone Noveck, Professor at Northeastern University and Director of the Burnes Center and The GovLab. Beth’s work centers on using AI to enhance participatory democracy and improve governance through technology.

The discussion continues The Rebooting Democracy in the Age of AI lecture series hosted by the Burnes Center for Social Change at Northeastern University, and its partner project The GovLab, in partnership with the Institute for Experiential AI.  The series explores how AI is reshaping democracy and brings together experts from diverse fields to discuss how AI can offer fresh solutions to the challenges facing modern democratic governance.
