Designing AI With Communities: the AIEP Project

Together with hundreds of families, the Burnes Center for Social Change and Innovate Public Schools are co-designing an AI-powered tool designed to empower families to better understand and engage with their child’s individualized education plan (IEP). This free, open-source platform aims to eliminate key barriers families face when engaging with IEPs, which are often are lengthy and packed with specialized educational jargon, making them challenging to understand. By integrating community perspectives into the heart of the platform's technological design, the project aims to ensure that the AI tool reflects and serves the needs, values, and aspirations of the people who will use it.

How New Jersey's AI Task Force Used AI Agents to Develop Evidence-Based Policy Solutions with New Jersey Residents

New Jersey's State AI Task Force used AI to develop more robust recommendations faster and with the benefit of large-scale community engagement. The Task Force used the online engagement tool All Our Ideas to prioritize a set of problems to focus on and used the AI-powered toolkit Policy Synth to conduct large-scale automated web research about the problems and possible solutions. As a result of this eight-week process, New Jersey is implementing free AI skills training for all public servants and developing an AI-powered labor market monitoring system to help workers navigate career trends.

Using AI? Learn How, Says the ABA to Lawyers in a Formal Opinion

Yesterday the American Bar Association published a formal opinion, declaring that under the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, lawyers using generative AI have a “duty of competence” to develop an “understanding of the evolving nature of GAI.” This is why InnovateUS is launching a new GenAI for Public Lawyers course this fall. My takeaway on the opinion: the ABA is recognizing the benefits of GAI but is requiring lawyers to: 1) Obtain truly informed consent from the client, explaining all the risks involved, 2) Ensure no confidential information is input into a GAI system, 3)Thoroughly verify all outputs for accuracy, and 4) Use GAI for general tasks that don't involve specific client information.

New White House Guidance on AI: Strong on Skills, Short on Public Engagement

The White House Office of Management and Budget recently released final guidance on the use of AI by federal agencies, emphasizing the need to build AI skills and expertise within the government workforce.
